Boland-Schreck Fund
The Boland-Schreck Fund for Liturgical Music has been established by Bishop Emeritus J. Kevin Boland in honor of Mrs. Patricia B. Schreck who was the Cathedral Organist and Choir Director for 66 years. The fund exists to provide support for the liturgical music program at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist.
Causes and Campaigns
Heritage Endowment Fund
The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist is an iconic symbol of Savannah, Georgia, gracing the skyline with its towering steeples – a view valued by our residents and visitors alike.
In 2001, Bishop J. Kevin Boland and Monsignor William O. O’Neill wisely envisioned a new, sustainable method of funding the Cathedral’s capital building needs. A Heritage Endowment Fund was established to move beyond the history of remedial repairs funded by debt. This Fund leads to a future of less-costly conservation and preservation paid with the investment returns of a body of funds specifically dedicated solely to those purposes. Our goal for this annual appeal will be to build the endowment to $5,000,000.
The current value in the Endowment is $4,369,000 as of September 30, 2022.
Mural Preservation Fund
The beautiful murals that adorn the upper reaches of our Cathedral have been deteriorating badly over the past several years. These 34 outstanding murals are regarded as the most extraordinary decorative feature of the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Our church has been favorably compared to the great Cathedrals of Europe. Though no work of art can rival Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, our murals are acknowledged as the most beautiful in the South. Modern air conditioning causes the thick Cathedral walls to “sweat”, causing damage to our beautiful and historic murals. Maintenance projects like this are necessary for such an old building and are very expensive. The Cathedral’s operating budget is only sufficient to support routine building maintenance.
Annual Giving
The Cathedral of St John the Baptist relies on the generosity of parishioners, friends, visitors, and patrons. By giving, you provide an essential and dependable way to take part in the support of the magnificent Cathedral and the programs and ministries offered. Additionally, your donations allow us to open the Cathedral to over 200,000 visitors each year.
